BUILDING YOUR EBAY BUSINESS: ONE MOM'S STORY

Many years ago I abandoned dreams of pursuing my art as a full-time career for a more sensible corporate job. Today, thanks to the internet, the way art is bought and sold has changed dramatically.

My favorite site for an emerging artist like myself is eBay. Ebay is fantastic because it is an equal playing field for anyone who has anything to sell. People use this amazing site to buy televisions, electronics and even carsÉbut do they buy art? Absolutely. The Raw Artist on ebay sells at least $25,000 a month! I've toyed with the idea of selling my art on ebay for a long time. I'd spend hours looking at other artists work and would think "I could do this." Well, maybe I could do it.

I had lots of obstacles to consider. Time, I have very little time. I'm a single mom with a full time job. Supplies. Supplies cost a lot of extra money that I don't have. Not to mention listing costs. Room. No room to create artwork. This was probably the biggest obstacle. I live in a very, very small apartment.

Just when I was about to talk myself out of this brilliant idea, I came across a form of art called ACEOs. ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. This craze actually began in the 16th century when wealthy men would have tiny portraits of their mistresses done so they could carry them around. Today they are simply tiny works of art that measure 2.5 x 3.5 inches, the size of standard playing cards. There are no other rules regarding subject or medium. I personally prefer collage, gouache, acrylic and gel pen drawings. All my concerns, solved. The dollars just rolled in from there, right? No way.

A big part of selling your artwork is building a following and trust. Even if your work is fantastic, buyers want to know you are serious and the only way to know that is from eBay's feedback system and your own consistency. The feedback system gives you a point for each transaction, buying or selling, and tells your potential customers what others have said about you. This is crucial. You want to have as perfect a score as possible. Another way to build trust is to post listings religiously. This can be difficult in the beginning because you will probably not make a huge profit and may have several works that don't even sell. It can be hard to be motivated under these circumstances but you have to keep up with it. I try to set aside some time everyday to create work or list art. It's been trial and error but I'm still plugging away. Here are a few things I've learned so far:

Do's:
Do research your competition. Pay attention to how they list, best times and starting prices. Do over-deliver on customer service. Remember, you are competing with thousands of other artists. When a customer chooses you, let them know you appreciate it. Do purchase art. There are two reasons this is important. One, it's good karma. You're supporting a field you want to be part of. Two, you will see how the competition packages their work and delivers on customer service. Do stick with it. It takes a lot of time to turn any kind of profit but if this is what you love, the journey can be gratifying.

Don'ts:
Don't under price or overprice your work. I've seen several bids that start at 1 penny and I can't figure this one out for the life of me. That just seems too low to begin. 99 cents is a pretty good place to begin. I've also seen listings start at 9.99 which is a little steep when you are unknown and you are not enticing the bidders. Some ACEOs go for up to $90 but those are not the norm. Buyers get excited when they drive the price up because they want to win. Let this dictate your opening bid. Don't copy! This is probably the most important rule. If you notice landscapes are selling well but you paint portraits, don't switch simply because that is what's selling. If you do that, you'll end up switching every time styles sell for different reasons and you'll never develop your own style. Don't expect to sell everything right out the gate. Don't neglect eBay's rules and regulations. There is always someone policing the listings officially and unofficially and will catch you if you violate their terms.

This has been a fantastic experience for me because it connects me to something I love. People telling me how much joy my art has brought to their lives is icing on the cake for me.
